This hat is made out of a thin 100% merino yarn. It is warm and light-weight. I loved the color at first sight 🙂 And I knew I wanted a super simple design to go with it. Simplicity can often lead to quite a striking result. I thought of a cosy hat, and I wanted it to be stretchy and knit-like. It somewhat look like a sock, ony for you head 😀
You only need patience during the process, since it is obviously very repetitive, not going to lie !
This hat is quite an easy project, however this knowledge is necessary :
- foundation half-double crochet (FHDC)
- working in the 3rd loop
- decreasing in half-double crochet = two half-double crochet together (HDC2TOG)
Size :
This free pattern is a true one-size-fits-all adult hat. It is very stretchy and fits my woman L size head circumference as well as my 10 year old child. To upsize it you could use a bigger hook (4 mm, US G).
Construction :
The hat is worked bottom-up, in a spiral, apart from the first 3 rows. Thus there is no visible joining seam.
Gauge :
In half-double crochet worked in the third loop :
15 stiches and 12 rows in 2.5 »
Supplies :
- 3,5 mm hook (US E/4 hook)
- Merino yarn, fingering weight : 70 grams / 180 meters (197 yards)
- Measuring tape
- Scissors, yarn needle
- A stitch marker can be useful.
Abbreviations :
The pattern follows US terms and abb.
- SC : single crochet
- HDC : half-double crochet
- SLST : slip stitch
- CH : chain
- HDC2TOG : 2 half-double crochet together (one decrease).
- FLO : front loop only
- BLO : back loop only
The Parisian Faux-stockinette Hat Instructions :
Round 1 :
Foundation HDC : 104. Join with a SLST. Chain 1.
Round 2 :
Wrong side facing (you can see the third loop facing you), SC in the BLO around. SLST in the first SC.
Round 3 :
Chain 1, turn.
HDC FLO around
Round 4 :
Don’t join, don’t turn, don’t chain.
Directly work over round 3 : HDC in 3rd loop only. (we begin the spiral work)
From now, work in spirals until the hat is between 6″ and 6.5″ tall. (up to 7″ for a bigger head size).
I did 27 of these rounds.
Decreases :
Put a stitch marker in the last stitch.
Decrease row 1 :
* 6 HDC, 1 HDC2TOG * repeat 13 times. Move the stitch marker in the last post.
Decrease row 2 :
* 5 HDC, 1 HDC2TOG * repeat 13 times. Move the stitch marker in the last post.
Decrease row 3 :
* 4 HDC, 1 HDC2TOG * repeat 13 times. Move the stitch marker in the last post.
Decrease row 4 :
* 3 HDC, 1 HDC2TOG * repeat 13 times. Move the stitch marker in the last post.
Decrease row 5 :
* 2 HDC, 1 HDC2TOG * repeat 13 times. Move the stitch marker in the last post.
Decrease row 6 :
* 1 HDC, 1 HDC2TOG * repeat 13 times. Move the stitch marker in the last post.
Decrease row 7 :
* HDC2TOG * repeat 13 times. Fasten off, leaving a 10 » tail.
Turn the hat inside out, grab the yarn end through the hole.
With the yarn needle, sew the hole, inserting the needle through the 3rd loop of every stitch around (13). Gently pull on the tail to tightly close the hole, secure the yarn with a knot, and weave in a few inches.
Weave in any ends from when you changed skeins.
Turn the hat on the right side.
With the beginning yarn tail, close the messy gap left in the foundation HDC round. Make a knot, weave in.
